Installing and Activating the ASTAware Search Engine

Windows 95/98/NT/2000 Users:

In addition to navigating the Digital Archive through the indexes, you can search for keywords in the text of the articles using the ASTAware search engine. The CD-ROM set comes with one license for the ASTAware SearchDisc search engine software (henceforth, ASTAware search engine) licensed from ASTAware Technologies Inc. To use the ASTAware search engine, you must first install it once on your hard drive. Please check the CD-ROM 0 contents for the exact location of the ASTAware installation software. Please refer to the licensing agreement before you install the ASTAware search engine.

Before you proceed, please

  • Make sure that you have Netscape 4.5 or higher (Netscape 6.0 is not fully tested since it is still in beta release), or Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher.
  • Make sure that Java JRE is installed on your computer. Usually, your windows system includes the necessary Java Run-time Environment (JRE). If not, you can obtain JRE from http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/jre/download-windows.html .
  • If you have previous installations of the ASTAware search engine on your local hard drive, please uninstall them.

Installation

  • Insert the CD-ROM 0 containing the ASTAware installation software into your drive.
  • Go to the contents through Windows Explorer and run Installer.exe (by double clicking it or by using the Run command from the Start Panel).
  • Follow the instructions provided by the ASTAware installer.
  • Choose a directory to install the ASTAware search engine and the search index. You can either choose C:\Program Files or another directory such as C:\temp. Make sure that you have about 300 MB of available space on your hard drive.
  • Specify the path to the CD-ROM that you will use to read the CD-ROMs in the Digital Archive. Examples: D:\ or E:\
  • Press Install to start the installation of the ASTAware search engine and the search index. This operation may take several minutes as the installer will copy about 300 MB of data from the CD-ROM onto your hard drive.
  • After the installation is complete, you will be able to run the ASTAware search engine from your Programs folder in your Windows START menu. In fact, you will find an entry for ASTAware SearchDisc in your Programs folder. To run the search engine, you click on SD Search from the ASTAware SearchDisc subfolder.

Activating the ASTAware Search Engine

  • To activate the ASTAware search engine, run Start>Programs>ASTAware SearchDisc>SD Search from your Windows Start menu. You can also create a shortcut for SD Search on your desktop.
  • The ASTAware search engine will be activated and will ask for confirmation of your CD-ROM path. A small window containing an ASTAware SearchDisc logo will appear. Leave this window open (you can minimize it as well). If you close this window, you will not be able to use the search function.
  • Your browser will also automatically be launched and you will be asked to insert any desired CD-ROM containing the content. If your browser does not automatically start, you can start it yourself and load index.htm from the top level directory of any desired CD-ROM containing the content.
  • Once the CD-ROM is inserted in the drive, you can press the Enter link in your browser. This brings up the Digital Archive interface along with search facilities.
  • Please read the Section on Searching the Content Using the Search Engine for conducting your searches.
  • If you want to use the CD-ROM without the ASTAware search engine, shutdown the ASTAware search engine by clicking on the "shutdown" message in the small ASTAware SearchDisc window. You can use the CD-ROM without the search engine by opening the file start.htm in your browser.
  • If you need to change the CD-ROM to access DjVu files that are not on the current CD-ROM, please follows the platform-specific instructions for changing CD-ROMs.
